Make Family Time Giving Time this Holiday Season

As we turn the calendars to November we realize that the holiday season is once again upon us. ‘Tis the season to spend time with family. It’s also a time we begin considering how we’re going to give back this holiday season. Why not combine the two and get some quality time with the family while giving back? Here are a few suggestions.

Collect your change.
We all have a place for spare change. During the holiday season, create a change jar accessible to the family and have everyone commit to placing their change in the jar through the end of the year. Vote on a charity of the family’s choice and donate the money at the end of the year. You’ll be surprised just how much you’ll be able to collect.

Clean out your closets.
We often think of spring cleaning as a time to clean out the closets. As you’re digging out your holiday decorations, have everyone clean out their closets and donate unused items and clothing to a local charity. This is especially a great time of year to shed a few of those old winter coats for those in need.

Cook a meal.
Get the entire family together to cook a meal for an elderly neighbor or for a family who is going through a tough time. While you’re having a fun, you’re also helping another family.

Parents who make giving a priority will often influence their children to become good givers. Spending time together this holiday season will be even more rewarding if you incorporate giving into your plans.
