Identities, Perceptions, and Care

Identities, perceptions, and care will address identities as a mosaic, including information on sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression and sex/gender assigned at birth. Issues facing marginalized identities will be highlighted, including important concepts to consider such as coming out and minority stress. What we can do to help, including the use of inclusive language, and inclusive policies and practices, will be touched upon.
Participants will learn how to:
- Define gender identity, gender expression, and sexual orientation.
- Describe how to be inclusive in policies and practices.
- Distinguish between intention and impact, as well as, ways to better serve clients with marginalized identities.
Pat Tetreault, PhD, MLS, is Founding Director of the LGBTQA+ Resource Center at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Pat is a member of NASPA, ACPA, and the Consortium for LGBT Resource Professionals in Higher Education. She has served on numerous committees and working groups including Pride @Nebraska, and is a board member for PFLAG-Lincoln. Pat has received numerous awards over the years, including ACPA’s Research Recognition Award (2018), Commitment to Social Justice Education Award (LGBTQA+ Center, 2017), and the LGBT Public Service Award (2016); the Chancellor’s Fulfilling the Dream Award (2013); the Chancellor’s Contributions to the Status of Women Award; and Outstanding Contributions to the GLBT Community Award.
Recent publications include first author on Perceptions of Campus Climate (2013); the Nebraska section in Proud Heritage: People, Issues, and Documents of the LGBT Experience (2014, Vol. 3); and is co-author of a chapter on Religious Freedom Restoration Acts in LGBT Americans at Risk (2018).
Pat is a long time social justice advocate; serves as a consultant; and has presented at regional, national and international conferences. Pat also enjoys water, gardening, is a foodie, and loves cats!
